Addiction is an all-consuming disease of the mind and the body. It pulls affected individuals away from the things they love and further along the path of substance abuse or compulsive behaviors. Addiction causes everything in a person’s life to revolve around the next drink or the next high. Those who struggle with substance and process addictions may lose a job due to drug use, go into debt because of gambling addiction or find themselves in prison for driving drunk. They are completely dependent on a substance or a process to feel happy, to quell anxiety or to get through their day.
The only way to become free from addiction is to break the cycle of dependence, first through gaining physical sobriety and then through replacing addictive behaviors with healthy habits. Accomplishing this alone, however, comes with a host of risks and pitfalls. For example, achieving physical sobriety includes getting through withdrawal symptoms that are uncomfortable and can be dangerous. In addition, having access to drugs, alcohol or outlets for a process addiction can make it difficult or impossible for an individual to resist cravings. In order to build a strong foundation for long-term recovery,it is best to seek professional assistance and guidance as you establish sobriety and hone the skills necessary to manage addiction for life. Residential treatment is often the first recommended course of care because it provides an immersive treatment environment in which individuals can fully focus on their recovery.

The residential treatment environment at Palmetto Addiction Recovery Center is based on the Therapeutic Community model. In this model, clients learn vital social and interpersonal skills and learn to accept the viewpoints and experiences of others. Through a substance-free community, engagement and peer support, clients in this model work together to solve problems. The size and design of our community and campus provide a unique opportunity to create a working model of healthy peer interaction and confrontation. Under the guidance of counselors, denial is overcome, behavior patterns are challenged, self-disclosure begins, changes in mindset occur and long-term sobriety skills are taught. Our residents come to support each other through their early recovery and beyond.

At Palmetto, each treatment week during the residential stay is carefully planned to provide the best use of each day and to address the many topics and issues that are essential to addiction recovery. Educational topics include:
Addiction is viewed in the context of an individual’s social and psychological deficits, and our residential treatment model focuses on developing personal accountability and responsibility for a socially productive life.
Residential treatment at Palmetto is designed to keep clients comfortable without limiting their independence. Our residents enjoy modern, updated living and common spaces across our Rayville, Louisiana campus. Our housing facilities are cabin-style, gender-specific units that house eight residents each. Residents are encouraged to be independent: they are responsible for their own living areas, respecting other residents’ space and belongings and choosing and planning their meals.
Our beautiful natural setting and dedicated recreation time allow our residents plenty of time to explore, enjoy the fresh air and take in the benefits of a peaceful bayou environment. We also provide a 3,000 square foot fitness center, outdoor sports equipment, and over 5,000 square feet of community spaces for gatherings and meetings.
There are no predetermined lengths of stay at our recovery center — instead of the typical 30-, 60- or 90-day programming, we offer flexibility based on each client’s progress through recovery. Staff and clients at Palmetto work together during their residential stay to assist each community member in moving through the four phases of addiction treatment.
Each client is given an explanation of the assignments to be achieved in each phase in order to successfully complete the corresponding phase. Phase advancement is then based on assignment completion and notable behavior, along with emotional and spiritual changes. Staff and patients meet weekly as a general community to consider each person’s request for phase advancement.
It is important to understand that residential treatment is designed to be temporary — the goal of treatment is to allow individuals affected by addiction a chance to reintegrate into daily life as productive and fulfilled members of society. Please contact our team with any questions about length of stay or to learn more about our options for continuing intensive outpatient care.
At Palmetto, we know that addiction is a chronic illness: while it is treatable, it requires long-term management rather than a one-time cure. We offer several specialized programs along so that every one of our clients receives the full course of care that they need to find lasting recovery. These levels of care include:
