Train Yourself to Wake Up in the Morning with These Tips

If you hit the snooze button in the morning and feel like a zombie, you are not alone. Lots of people struggle to get out of bed in the morning. It begins with figuring out different reasons why you cannot stay awake in the morning and what to do about them. Chances are you are not getting enough sleep, or good enough sleep, and need to tweak your bedtime routine. Learn how to train yourself to wake up in the morning feeling like you are ready to conquer the world.

Why It’s Hard

If you struggle to get up in the morning, there are a myriad of reasons. It is not just about loving sleeping or hating mornings. Lifestyle factors, medical conditions, and medications make it hard to wake up. These include:

  • Parasomnias: sleepwalking, sleep talking, and night terrors
  • Sleep apnea: causes periods of stopped breathing during sleep
  • Sleep deficiency: involves not getting quality sleep or sleep deprivation
  • Stress and anxiety: interferes with ability to fall or stay asleep
  • Depression: linked to excessive daytime sleepiness and insomnia
  • Circadian rhythm sleep disorders: prevents you from having a regular sleep routine
  • Certain medications: beta blockers, muscle relaxants, and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor antidepressants

Get Up When Tired

Many things can help wake you up when you are tired. If an underlying condition is causing excessive sleepiness or drowsiness in the morning, you may need a combination of home remedies and medical treatment.

  • Get a sleep schedule: go to bed and wake up at the same time every day if you want to get up feeling better in the morning
  • Figure out sleep need: seven to nine hours per night is recommended if you want to be getting enough sleep
  • Improve bedtime routine: you will sabotage efforts to get up early without realizing it by drinking caffeine, water, or eating too close to bedtime.
  • Close screens down an hour before you go to bed to stop the blue light from interrupting your sleep cycle
  • Eat healthier meals: when you eat healthier meals, you feel better overall. Cut back on refined sugars and carbs to boost metabolism and regulate your sleep cycle
  • Exercise: exercise has proven to improve sleep and conditions that cause insomnia and excessive sleepiness, including anxiety and depression

It is possible to train yourself to wake up on time in the morning. A few changes to your routine can help you get rid of morning fatigue so you can be up bright and early. If you have a sleep disorder or other medical condition, it may help to revisit this with your doctor to see what you can do to help yourself sleep better.
