Medical Detox
For many people, detox is the first step toward treatment. It is the point where the body begins adjusting to life without alcohol or drugs, and it can be an important time for medical support, reassurance, and stabilization.
Palmetto offers medically monitored detox services in an ASAM 3.7 level of care, with 24-hour nursing support. Our goal is to help clients begin treatment safely, respectfully, and with the support they need to take the next step in recovery.
Built on decades of experience caring for individuals and families affected by addiction, Palmetto’s detox program supports clients through withdrawal with attention to comfort, safety, stabilization, and each person’s individual needs.
A Safer Way to Begin
Withdrawal can look different for each person. The substances involved, length of use, overall health, medications, mental health concerns, and past withdrawal experiences can all affect what type of support may be needed.
Medical detox gives clients a supported place to begin. During detox, clients are monitored by nursing staff and supported by medical and clinical professionals who help assess symptoms, promote comfort, and guide the next steps in care.
ASAM 3.7 Medically Monitored Detox
Palmetto provides detox services in an ASAM 3.7 level of care. This level of care is designed for individuals who need medically monitored withdrawal management and residential support, but who do not require hospital-level inpatient care.
The goal of detox is stabilization. As clients begin to feel more physically and emotionally steady, the treatment team helps them move into the deeper work of recovery.
Detox Within the Residential Community
At Palmetto, detox is connected to the residential treatment experience. While clients are still medically monitored during detox, many begin participating in the rhythm of the residential program as soon as they are physically able.
For some clients, the first few days may require more rest, nursing support, and medical monitoring. For others, beginning to attend groups, classes, meals, and other recovery-focused activities can provide structure, connection, and a sense of forward movement during a difficult transition.
This process does not dismiss a client’s detox symptoms or medical needs. Each person’s participation is guided by clinical judgment, medical monitoring, and their ability to safely engage. When appropriate, structure, connection, and purposeful activity can help make the detox experience feel more manageable while helping clients begin the work of recovery.
What to Expect During Detox
Every detox experience is different. Some clients need more medical monitoring and rest during the first few days, while others are able to begin participating in parts of the residential program sooner.
During detox, clients may receive:
- 24-hour nursing support
- Medical monitoring and withdrawal assessment
- Support for comfort, hydration, rest, and stabilization
- Medication support when clinically appropriate
- Medical or psychiatric review when needed
- Clinical support and introduction to treatment expectations
- Planning for the next phase of care
As clients are physically able, the treatment team helps them begin participating in the structure, community, and clinical work of Palmetto’s residential program.
Detox Is the Beginning of Treatment
Detox can help the body begin to clear alcohol or drugs, but recovery involves much more than getting through withdrawal. Addiction often affects emotions, relationships, routines, decision-making, family systems, and the way a person responds to stress.
That is why detox is connected to a broader treatment process at Palmetto. Once clients are more stable, they can begin focusing on the deeper work of recovery through clinical services, group work, peer support, family involvement when appropriate, and continuing care planning.
Experience With a Wide Range of Needs
Palmetto has years of experience supporting individuals through withdrawal from a wide range of substances and circumstances. Some clients come to us after years of alcohol or drug use. Others arrive after a relapse, a professional concern, a family crisis, or a recommendation from a physician, employer, board, attorney, or monitoring program.
Because every situation is different, our team works to understand each client’s medical needs, substance use history, mental health concerns, and treatment goals before making recommendations.
How Long Does Detox Last?
Detox length varies by individual need. For many clients, detox may last approximately 3 to 10 days, though the exact length depends on medical stability, withdrawal symptoms, substances involved, and the treatment team’s clinical judgment.
Some clients may move into residential treatment quickly, while others may need more time and monitoring before fully participating in the residential program.

The decision to enter detox can feel intimidating, especially for clients who have had difficult withdrawal experiences in the past. Palmetto’s goal is to help each person begin treatment in a setting that feels safe, steady, and supportive.
From the first day of care, our team works to help clients stabilize, understand what comes next, and begin moving toward meaningful recovery.

Alcohol Detox
Alcohol withdrawal can vary from person to person, and some clients need medical monitoring as they begin treatment. Palmetto offers medically monitored detox in an ASAM 3.7 level of care with 24-hour nursing support. Detox at Palmetto is connected to the residential treatment experience. As clients are physically able, they may begin participating in groups, meals, classes, and other recovery-focused activities while still receiving medical support.

Drug & Prescription Medication Detox
Palmetto supports clients detoxing from a range of substances, including prescription medications and other drugs. Each client’s needs are reviewed based on substance use history, medical concerns, current medications, withdrawal symptoms, and previous treatment or detox experiences. Our goal is to help clients begin treatment with appropriate medical monitoring, support, and a clear understanding of the next step in care.

Detox for Professionals
Physicians, nurses, attorneys, executives, first responders, and other licensed or safety-sensitive professionals may enter treatment with additional concerns related to work, licensing, monitoring, documentation, or return-to-work expectations. When properly authorized, Palmetto can communicate with approved professionals, employers, licensing boards, monitoring agencies, attorneys, or referral sources as part of treatment and continuing care planning.

FAQs
What is medical detox?
Medical detox is the process of helping a client begin treatment while their body adjusts to being without alcohol, drugs, or certain medications. At Palmetto, detox is medically monitored in an ASAM 3.7 level of care with 24-hour nursing support.
What does ASAM 3.7 mean?
ASAM 3.7 refers to a medically monitored level of care for clients who need withdrawal management and residential support but do not require hospital-level inpatient care. This allows clients to receive medical monitoring while beginning treatment in a residential setting.
How long does detox usually last?
Detox length varies by individual need. For many clients, detox may last approximately 3 to 10 days, depending on the substances involved, withdrawal symptoms, medical stability, current medications, and the treatment team’s clinical judgment.
Is detox separate from residential treatment?
At Palmetto, detox is connected to the residential treatment experience. Clients are still medically monitored during detox, but many begin participating in groups, classes, meals, and other recovery-focused activities as soon as they are physically able.
Will I have to stay in bed during detox?
Not necessarily. Some clients need more rest, nursing support, and medical monitoring during the first few days. Others are able to begin participating in parts of the residential program sooner. Participation depends on each client’s medical needs, symptoms, and clinical readiness.
Will medication be used during detox?
Medication may be used when clinically appropriate. Medication decisions depend on the client’s substance use history, withdrawal symptoms, medical needs, current medications, and the treatment team’s clinical judgment.
Can Palmetto help with nontraditional or emerging substances?
Some clients come to Palmetto after using substances that do not fit neatly into one category, including synthetic, over-the-counter, or nontraditional substances. Our team works to understand what has been used, what symptoms are present, and what level of medical monitoring or treatment support may be appropriate.
Is psychiatric support available during detox?
Yes. Clients are evaluated and offered appropriate services as part of Palmetto’s clinical and licensing requirements. Psychiatric support may include assessment, medication review, medication management, or consultation when clinically indicated. The level of psychiatric involvement depends on each client’s symptoms, history, current medications, and treatment needs, and is integrated with the broader medical, nursing, and clinical care plan.
Is detox enough to treat addiction?
No. Detox can help the body begin to clear alcohol or drugs, but recovery involves much more than getting through withdrawal. Addiction often affects emotions, relationships, routines, decision-making, and coping patterns. Detox is the beginning of treatment, not the full treatment process.
What happens after detox?
As clients are physically able, they continue into the clinical, educational, peer, and community-based work of Palmetto’s residential program. The goal is to move from early withdrawal management into the deeper work of recovery.
Can Palmetto detox every substance?
Not every substance or medical situation is appropriate for every treatment setting. Palmetto has experience supporting clients through withdrawal from a wide range of substances and circumstances, but the appropriate level of care depends on the client’s medical needs, symptoms, substance use history, and safety considerations. If another level of care is more appropriate, the team will discuss options.
What is the goal of detox at Palmetto?
The goal of detox is to help clients begin treatment with appropriate medical monitoring, support, and preparation for the next phase of recovery. At Palmetto, detox is connected to the broader residential treatment experience so clients can begin building momentum as soon as they are able.
